Flexible Phones From Samsung – Not A Dream Any More

When I was a child I dreamed of having a flexible phone – a phone I could fold and put in my pocket or hide somewhere or just play with… I thought it would be really fun! But of course, no such phones were available back then.

Some 2-3 years ago Sony introduced some flexible display, and I thought my dream was to come true, but unfortunately they never released or even officially announced any smartphone with such a display… Then Nokia showed a flexible prototype of a phone during Nokia World a couple of weeks ago, however, we’re still not sure the Finnish company will ever release a commercial phone based on that prototype. I was about to think that the world won’t see any real flexible phone during the coming years, but today I learned that Samsung has plans to make such a phone, and not “someday,” but rather soon, in 2012 – most likely, in the beginning of the year!

Here’s what Samsung’s vice president of investor relations Robert Yi has said confirming the rumors:

“The flexible display we are looking to introduce sometime in 2012, hopefully the earlier part… The application probably will start from the handset side.”

For now we have no idea what those flexible Samsung mobile phones will look like. Will they be slates, candybars or clamshells? Or will it be something completely different? Samsung has given no concrete info on this, so we’ll have to wait for the official announcements of these devices to find it out.

We don’t know how these devices will be called, too, or what platform they’ll run (though I’m almost sure it will be Android), but we hope that all these details will be revealed soon enough – 2012 isn’t far away after all, so there is a chance to learn something new about these new flexible phones this month or in December.
